Austin John Obermeyer | Age 18 | Gretna High School

While many athletes recall their earliest childhood sports successes, Austin Obermeyer prefers to be honest while sharing his soccer story when he was just four years old. “Actually that’s when I scored my very first goal; unfortunately it was for the OTHER team, which really didn’t matter because everyone cheered for me anyway.”

Growing up, Obermeyer played every sport he could, including football, baseball, wrestling, and basketball, but soccer was his first, and has ultimately been where he’s achieved the level of success he has at Gretna High School, as their starting Goalkeeper the last two years.

As a sophomore, Obermeyer recorded 1095 minutes, while maintaining a .8 goals against average, with 55 saves and 5 shutouts. Last year his minutes bumped to 1446, while lowering his GAA to .775, making 77 saves and finishing with 8 shutouts. His play didn’t go unnoticed, as he was named All-District and All-Conference in both his Sophomore and Junior seasons, while being named 2nd and 1st team All-State in consecutive years.

“Stats are obviously important to a goalkeeper, but even the best goalkeeper will get scored on without a good defense. I have been fortunate to have the best defense in the state in front of me,” credits Obermeyer.

When not playing club soccer for 402 Evolution, or for the Dragons, Obermeyer stays active playing basketball and volleyball on the intramural teams at school, is a member of G-Club, enjoys reading, writing, and of course loves to play the occasional video game with friends.

With his family, Obermeyer enjoys volunteering at Sienna Frances-House feeding the homeless and is very involved with the Saint Patricks’s Youth Group, which provides many opportunities to serve the community.

Obermeyer has elected to continue his playing career at Bellevue University upon graduating this spring, and of course after potentially bringing Gretna a State Championship.

Austin is the son of Mark and Maureen Obermeyer of Gretna. He has an older sister Lindsey, and older brother Logan.
